We have collected the most beautiful pre-Christmas highlights for you.

The pre-Christmas season in Salzburg would be without the numerous Christmas markets pretty dreary. The first port of call is usually the large Christmas market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz. Accompanied by the mighty cathedral and a no less impressive Christmas tree, a festive mood spreads in no time. At Mirabell Palace, things are a bit clearer. The best entertainment is always provided with numerous concerts and the Perchtenlauf. The Hellbrunn Advent Magic has truly earned its name. Light chains and around 13,000 red balls give Hellbrunn Palace a particularly radiant face.

Sounding Advent in Salzburg

Of course, everything in the Mozart city of Salzburg revolves around culture. Numerous Advent singing and Advent concerts accompany you through the run-up to Christmas. The Salzburg Advent Singing in the Great Festival Hall with around 200 participants, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2016, inspires thousands of visitors from all over the world. The Hohensalzburg Fortress is getting in the mood for Christmas under the motto „Mozart and Advent Music“. These classic Salzburg events in December can be combined with an exquisite candlelit dinner in the fortress panorama restaurant. Classical notes can also be heard in the Romanesque hall of St. Peter in conjunction with Christmas carols that accompany you through the afternoon. On the Advent Saturdays and Thursdays you should definitely stop at the Christkindlmarkt in the city center, because at 6.30 p.m. wind melodies sound from the three towers around the Residenzplatz.

Perchten and Krampus runs have a very special tradition in the entire state and of course shouldn’t be missing in Salzburg in the run-up to Christmas. The most famous runs include the one from Neutor through Getreidegasse, which this year takes place on December 3rd from 5:30 p.m., as well as the traditional Krampus run at the Christmas market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz (December 5th from 7:00 p.m.). The city’s museums are also preparing for the pre-Christmas season in Salzburg, for example with a special exhibition in the toy museum or the Christmas museum on Mozartplatz in the former Cafà © Glockenspiel. The most beautiful nativity scenes can be admired year after year on Residenzplatz.
